Homeowner’s have garages for different reasons; the obvious reason being to store their automobiles to keep them out of the weather and free from damage that can be caused by the elements. Some may not even use the garage to store an automobile; it may simply just be used for extra storage space.

When it comes to garage doors, there are two types: Manual garage doors and automatic garage doors. The do-it-yourselfer can install either type of door by following a few simple instructions.

For the homeowner that opts to have the easier to install manual door, there are few tips that can help in installing a manual garage door. All a person needs are a few standard tools; a drill, drill bits, a hex wrench and an open-end wrench. There are a few basic guidelines for installing manual garage doors:

  1. Attach the flag bracket and horizontal angle and connect them to the door jamb
  2. After connecting the torsion tubs and the springs, place them in each bracket.
  3. Measure the length of release for the spring, then tighten the screws to the torsion tube.
  4. Now secure the drums; first the left side, then the right side.
  5. Attach the tube retainer and wind the spring.

For the homeowner that wants the convenience of an automatic garage door, please keep in mind that these will be harder to install than manual doors because they are heavier. Have a family member or friend help you do this. Here are a few basic steps to installing an automatic garage door:

  1. Attach the drive unit to the track.
  2. Finish connecting the rest of the sections of track.
  3. Attach a mounting bracket to the end of the track, then attach that to the beam above the garage door opening.
  4. Follow the instructions that came with the garage door to attach the motor. It is absolutely necessary to attach the motor to a beam in the ceiling.
  5. Run the wires from the motor to the wall switch.
  6. Install the infrared sensors.
  7. Connect the garage door to the door opener.

Both manual garage doors and automatic garage doors operate on spring tension. With extended use of the garage door, these springs will get weak and break and be in need of repair. There are a few simple things that can be done to replace these springs:

  1. Check the metal tracks. Tighten any loose bolts at the brackets.
  2. Check to see if the tracks are level. If they are not, loosen the bolts and gently tap them into alignment and retighten the bolts.
  3. Clean the tracks to remove dirt and hardened grease.
  4. Check for loose hardware and tighten as needed. If you have a swing up door, check the plates where the spring is mounted and tighten screws as needed. If you have a roll up door, check the hinges that hold the door together and tighten any loose screws and replace any damaged hinges.

If you are not a do it yourselfer or if you run across a situation you cannot fix on your own, do not be afraid to call a professional for all of your Garage Door Services.
